Liposuction for weight loss: Is it really effective?

Obesity has become a grave concern worldwide, owing to the various health complications that it has been linked to. We usually focus on the physical impact of being overweight or obese, however, we cannot completely ignore how it affects a person psychologically. Although many people champion the idea of body positivity, obese people still have to face many challenges in their day-to-day lives. It lowers a person’s self-esteem, confidence and self-worth. Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that helps to sculpt a person’s body by removing stubborn fat from difficult areas, helping them achieve a body that they have always dreamt of. In this blog, we have elaborated on the procedure with the help of experts specialising in plastic and cosmetic surgery in Gurugram.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction ranks among the top 3 of the most popular plastic surgeries performed across the globe. It is an advanced surgical intervention that uses a suction technique to extract excess body fat. A lot of you must be wondering why not go for exercise and diet instead, but it is pertinent to understand that these do not work instantly and, in some cases, it might not work at all. As per the experts from the best hospital in Gurugram, liposuction is not an option for everyone and there are a few criteria that are to be met. The most important aspect of this is the patient’s age. Although the age limit for the same is 30 to 40 years, but at times, people above 40 years of age are also seen undergoing liposuction if they have good skin tone and are keen for body contouring.

How does Liposuction work?

Our body consists of two types of unhealthy fats - Visceral fat and subcutaneous fat. The former is unhealthy and surrounds vital organs such as, the heart and the liver. Visceral fat is most commonly found within the abdominal cavity. The latter accounts for nearly 90 per cent of all the fat stored in your body and lies just beneath the skin. It is easily visible, yet very hard to get rid of. Liposuction only works for subcutaneous fat found in areas like the upper arms, buttocks, hips, thighs, chin, neck, chest and back.

The procedure is carried out under the influence of anaesthesia (local or general) and sedatives, by making a tiny incision to introduce the cannula. This is carefully moved back and forth to loosen up the fat, which is then suctioned out with the help of a vacuum. You are likely to experience swelling and fluid retention for a few days, following which the results are evident.

How many types of Liposuction are there?

Liposuction can be performed using different techniques, based on which the procedure can be classified into a few different types.

  • Tumescent Liposuction - It is the oldest type of liposuction that involves the administration of a saline solution, lidocaine and epinephrine, which together, make it easier to remove the fat.
  • Power-assisted Liposuction - The procedure is carried out with the help of a liposuction cannula using mechanical power. This is usually recommended for targeting areas with large amounts of stored fats.
  • UAL - It stands for ultrasound-assisted liposuction, a technique that uses ultrasound waves delivered by a laser probe for liquefying the fat cells, which are then easier to remove. The added advantage of UAL is good skin contraction and are beneficial in revision surgeries.
  • Laser-assisted Liposuction - The procedure involves the use of laser energy which is consistently delivered to the concerned area with the help of a probe. This is also referred to as SmartLipo

Liposuction can actually help to spot-treat areas with stubborn fat, helping you get your dream figure, self-confidence and self-esteem. Want to know if liposuction is an option for you? Consult the best cosmetic surgeon in Gurugram to find out.
