Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty is also known as Kyphoplasty. It is a Minimally Invasive procedure that is recommended for patients diagnosed with spinal compression fractures. The aim of the surgery is to offer stability, and relieve pain and involves the injection of bone cement in the affected vertebra. The procedure is performed via a tiny puncture and takes about an hour.

What are the indications for Vertebroplasty?
Vertebroplasty is usually reserved for patients with progressive back pain and other symptoms triggered by compression fractures of the spine. The major indications of Vertebroplasty include:

Reduced mobility and loss of function
Severe pain related to the fracture

If your pain is due to any other underlying condition apart from the fracture, you might not qualify for the procedure.

How is the procedure performed?
The procedure is carried out with the help of a trocar, a hollow needle that is pierced through the skin. This involves the use of detailed imaging guidance offered by a fluoroscope. Once the needle is in the right position, doctors administer the cement to bind the fractured Vertebrae.
