Spinal Fusion is also known as Arthrodesis. It is a surgical procedure that aims at addressing the problems concerning the smaller bones within the spinal column. As the name suggests, it involves the permanent fusion of two or more adjacent vertebrae into a single bone. This is done to reduce motion between the bones, so as to relieve back pain.
Who needs a Spinal Fusion?
Spinal Fusion is recommended for patients who have been experiencing extreme pain due to any of the following spinal conditions.
Procedure involved
Spinal Fusion Surgery is carried out under the influence of general anesthesia, which means that the patient will be unconscious throughout the procedure. Your vitals will be monitored prior to the surgery and IV drips will be connected to administer medicines and nutritional fluids.
A special bone graft will be used to bind together the vertebrae. This graft is either prepared by taking a small section of bone from the pelvic area of the patient or by using synthetic material.
An incision is made depending on the area of the spine that is to be fused. Once the spinal canal is exposed, the bone graft is carefully placed between the two adjacent vertebrae. This is fixed in the right position with the help of fixation devices like plates, screws, and rods.
