Spinal Deformities

Spinal Deformity refers to a condition marked by the abnormal alignment of the spinal column that causes unusual bending or twisting of the back. Spinal deformities not only affect the physical appearance of the person but may also give rise to various neurological problems, pain and limited mobility. A person may have such deformities since birth or these may be acquired later due to age-related wear and tear, underlying degenerative disease or traumatic injury.

What are the different types of Spinal Deformities?
There are three common types of spinal deformities. These are:

  • Kyphosis - It is marked by the forward curvature of the spine in the thoracic and sacral regions, which leads to the forward rounding of the upper part of the back. It can affect people of any age group but is most common in adolescents. People with kyphosis tend to have hunched shoulders.
  • Lordosis - Also known as swayback, it is marked by the forward curvature of the spine in the neck or the lower back. It can be seen in people belonging to any age group. Lordosis has been linked with chronic lower back pain and loss of bladder control.
  • Scoliosis - It is marked by a sideways curvature in the spine, which is most commonly seen in adolescents. Females are at 8 times higher risk of developing this problem and it is most likely to affect children lying in the age group of 10 to 15 years.

What are the major causes of Spinal Deformities?
The underlying cause of a Spinal Deformity is not always known. Here are some known factors that may be responsible for it:

  • Existing neuromuscular conditions like muscular dystrophy
  • Congenital malformations and abnormalities of the spinal cord
  • Previous surgery on a baby’s chest wall
  • Traumatic spine injury
  • Infections involving the spine
