Neurovascular Surgery

Neurovascular Surgery is an umbrella term used for any conventional or minimally invasive surgical procedure that is performed on patients with complex Vascular problems involving the Brain and Spine. Such problems can be congenital or acquired after birth and can disrupt the normal flow of blood to the Brain and Spine. Neurovascular Surgery aims at correcting such malformations to restore normal blood flow and alleviate the risks of life-threatening complications.

Who needs Neurovascular Surgery?
Not every patient suffering from a Neurovascular condition needs surgery. In mild cases, the condition can be managed with medication and lifestyle changes. Surgery is usually recommended for patients with complex problems, such as:

  • Brain Haemorrhage
  • AVM or Arteriovenous Malformations
  • Carotid Stenosis
  • Stroke and Transient Ischemic attack
  • Spinal Aneurysm
  • Chiari malformations
  • Brain Aneurysm
  • Atherosclerosis of the Carotid or Vertebral Artery
  • Dural Arteriovenous Malformation
  • Cavernous Malformation

What are the different types of Neurovascular Surgery?
Neurovascular Surgery can be of several different types, which include:

  • Microsurgery - This involves the use of a special microscope that helps the doctors to precisely operate on the nerves that are located in delicate areas of the brain.
  • Endovascular Surgery - It is also referred to as neuro-interventional neurosurgery. The modality follows a minimally invasive approach, involving the use of a catheter which is guided by detailed imaging techniques.
  • Open Neurovascular Surgery - It follows a conventional approach, in which the doctors make a huge incision to assess and treat the problem.
  • Radiosurgery - This is an advanced surgical modality that involves the use of a Gamma Knife for treating complex neurovascular problems. The problem is targeted without making any incisions or cuts, from outside the body.
  • Hybrid Surgery - The technique is used for treating complex lesions and combines surgical and endovascular techniques to ensure added safety and precision.
