Brain Aneurysm Treatment

A Brain Aneurysm refers to a weak spot on any of the blood vessels found within the brain. When blood flows through this section of the vessel, it is pushed outwards, leading to the formation of a tiny bulge. Aneurysms can sometimes rupture or burst, leading to subarachnoid Haemorrhage (SAH).

Brain Aneurysms are more likely to be found in adults as compared to children and usually affect females. A person can have either one aneurysm or multiple aneurysms at the same time.

What are the different types of Brain Aneurysms?

  • Saccular Aneurysms - This is the most common type of brain aneurysm that presents as a dome-shaped bulge. It is connected to the artery by a narrow neck
  • Fusiform Aneurysms  - This is not as common as saccular aneurysms and they do not form a bulge. Rather they present as a widened spot in the blood vessel.
  • In rare cases, the Aneurysms might become enlarged and rupture, leading to a brain bleed. This is commonly referred to as a hemorrhagic stroke. The condition is very serious and potentially life-threatening.

What are the indications of a Brain Aneurysm?
The symptoms of a Brain Aneurysm are silent and these become evident when the aneurysm ruptures. Common symptoms that suggest that a person has a ruptured Aneurysm include:

  • Sudden onset of intense Headache
  • Loss of consciousness or drowsiness
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Loss of balance in things like walking and normal coordination
  • Stiff neck
  • Pupil dilation
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Blurring of vision or double vision
  • Drooped eyelid
  • Confusion or trouble with mental awareness
  • Seizures.

Although the symptoms of Brain Aneurysms are usually silent, they can result in a life-threatening brain bleed, which calls for the need for immediate medical care.
